The Lam Rim Buddhist Centre, South Africa, was founded in 1993 by the late Geshe Damcho Yonten at the request of students and with the permission of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. The centre is unique in being the only Gelugpa centre in Africa and has had the honour of being blessed by many eminent teachers from Drepung and Sera Monasteries and especially by the visit and blessing of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lam in 2004.
The purpose of the centre is to benefit the people of South Africa and the African continent by providing a place where they can pursue spiritual practice, obtain advice and teaching from qualified Buddhist teachers as well as providing support for Buddhist practitioners and meditators.
Since it’s inception it has hosted many teachers from the Theravadin, Kagyu and Nyingma traditions while preserving its close ties with Drepung Monastery in India from which it draws its teachers
Since the COVID19 pandemic we have been offering both online and in person teaching and will continue to do so in order to reach all who wish to participate in the centre’s events and regular teaching schedules will be published on this web site and other social media sites
